LEWISBURG, Pa. - Lindsay Horbatuck (Avon, Conn./Avon) recorded her third consecutive double-double, but a pair of lengthy scoring droughts ended Bucknell women's basketball's hopes of a fourth straight victory. The Bison (5-22, 3-9 PL) fell 49-38 to Holy Cross at Sojka Pavilion on Saturday. Alyssa Dunn (Mason, Ohio/Seven Hills School) led the team with 13 points.
With her 12 points and 12 rebounds against Holy Cross (15-12, 6-6 PL), Horbatuck now has seven double-doubles on the year. Five of those have come during Patriot League play. In the last three games alone, the junior is averaging 12.0 points and 10.7 rebounds. She added two steals on Saturday to lead the team.
Even Horbatuck's hustle could not keep Bucknell from falling behind. The Bison struggled to find the bottom of the net throughout the game and ended the night shooting .270 (17-for-63). The Crusaders had similar struggles, shooting .339 (20-for-59) from the field, but most of their woes came in the first half.
Both teams went more than six minutes between field goals at one point during the opening frame. In the final 14:20 of the first, there were just 11 points between the two. Holy Cross led 19-12 at the break after both teams shot .200 from the field.
Bucknell's 12 points set a new Sojka Pavilion record for fewest points in a half. Horbatuck and Dunn had four points apiece, and Horbatuck was already up to seven rebounds.
Bucknell's last field goal in the first half came at 7:54 and the Bison did not hit another layup until 16:25 in the second half. Rachel Voss (Cincinnati, Ohio/Loveland) collected a rebound on her own miss and earned the second-chance bucket. By that point, Holy Cross' lead was up to 25-14.
The Crusaders' maintained a cushion around 10 points for much of the half until Bucknell got it down to five at the 4:14 mark. Dunn drove hard to the basket and banked in a desperation layup while being knocked to the ground. The acrobatic shot turned into a three-point play as she hit the free throw and set the score at 39-34.
Bucknell got Holy Cross' lead back down to five points a minute later thanks to a turnaround jumper from Voss, but the Crusaders ended the game on an 8-2 run. A final layup from Amy Lepley set the score at 49-38.
Lepley led all players with 20 points. Ten of those points came in the second half when Holy Cross was 13 of 24 (.542) from the field. Bucknell shot 11-for-33 (.333) in the second. Joining the game leaders was Christina Chukwuedo (Monessen, Pa./Monessen) who, after celebrating Senior Night, posted a Bucknell-high five assists.
The Bison did most of their damage in the paint. Bucknell outscored Holy Cross 30-22 in the interior. The Crusaders had a slight edge in rebounding, however, 43-40.
Bucknell will play its final home game of the season on Wednesday when it hosts American at 7 p.m. at Sojka Pavilion.
