LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's track and field team began its 2012-13 season Saturday by hosting the Bison Opener and two student-athletes earned Patriot League weekly awards on Monday based on their performances at the unscored meet. Sophomore Christian Lupica (Newtown, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) was named the Track Athlete of the Week by the league office, while Leonard Joseph (Whitesboro, N.Y./Clinton) was Field Athlete of the Week.
Lupica had a standout day as he set the school record in the 60-meter hurdles and won the 300 in the second-best time in program history in the event. Lupica's time of 8.05 seconds in the 60 hurdles edged out Robert Arent's previous record by .02 seconds. Lupica, who finished third in Saturday's race, entered the meet second on the list (8.11). He was also strong in the 300, winning the event in a time of 35.19, putting him second in program history behind only Kerry Boyle. Lupica and teammate Kevin Tapper finished first and second in the 300.
A Second Team All-Patriot selection both indoors and outdoors a year ago, Lupica earned his first career Patriot League Track Athlete of the Week honor.
The 2012 Patriot League champion in the weight throw, Joseph picked up his fifth career M-F Athletic Male Field Athlete of the Week honor after winning the weight throw with a toss of 61 feet, 8.5 inches at the Bison Opener. That was easily an IC4A-qualifying mark and it was his eighth career win in the weight throw.
Bucknell will now be idle until Jan. 5 when it hosts the Bucknell Mini Meet inside Gerhard Fieldhouse.
