LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell volleyball sent its veterans out with a bang as the Bison defeated Holy Cross 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-13) at Davis Gym on Senior Night on Friday. Kebah Edoho (Odenton, Md./Arundel) led all players with 14 kills and Kat Tauscher (Washington, D.C./National Cathedral School) tallied a match-high 22 assists shortly after being honored for their four years in the Orange & Blue. Bucknell will play its final home match of the year tomorrow against Army at 5 p.m.
Bucknell (9-17, 3-8 PL) put together one of its most complete matches of the year, hitting .228 as a team and holding Holy Cross (2-25, 1-10 PL) to a .080 hitting percentage. Edoho was a particularly bright spot for the Bison offense as she reached her career-best 14 kills on a .571 attack percentage. Tauscher also had a double-double, adding 10 digs to her 22 assists.
The Bison also won the blocking battle. Bucknell registered 8.0 total team blocks, compared to 6.0 for Holy Cross. Edoho finished with six and Karen Campbell (Chesapeake, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate) had two. With 103 and 100 blocks, respectively, this season Edoho and Campbell are the first Bison to hit the century mark since 2006. They are also the first Bucknell duo to record 100 blocks in a single season since 1995.
Bucknell's strongest set came in the third as it closed out the match. A kill from Edoho gave the Bison an 8-1 lead and, although the Crusaders drew within three midway through the set thanks to some Bucknell errors, the Bison were never really in danger of falling behind. Morgan Mientus (Chicago, Ill./Saint Ignatius College Prep) gave her team match point with her seventh kill of the evening and an attack error from the Crusaders called it a night.
The third set was the second straight in which Bucknell had gone up early. The second frame also had the Bison going up 8-2 after Campbell and Sarah Morris (Marietta, Ga./Pope) teamed up for a block. Bucknell never trailed in that set although it turned out to be the closest at 25-22.
The evening's opener was a little rockier initially for Bucknell. Holy Cross took an early lead, going up 10-7 before forcing the Bison into a timeout. It wasn't until Edoho and Hannah Young (McConnellsburg, Pa./Broadfording Christian Academy (Md.)) registered a block did Bucknell regain the scoring advantage at 17-16. The momentum stayed on Bucknell's side after that defensive effort and spurred the Bison on to their third conference victory.
In addition to the seniors' performances, Bucknell was also led by Leylin Marroquin (Lone Tree, Colo./Highlands Ranch) with 14 digs. Kristen Titley (Coral Gables, Fla./Palmer Trinity School) added eight kills. On the Crusaders' side, Megan Lynch tallied nine kills and Christiana Blakeslee had 22 assists.
Bucknell's win on Friday snapped a two-game skid to Holy Cross. The home team has now won each of the last five matches in the series.
