LEWISBURG, Pa. - Playing in its final match at home Bucknell volleyball could not keep pace with Army's power, falling 3-0 (25-12, 25-21, 25-11) at Davis Gym on Saturday evening. Karen Campbell (Chesapeake, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate) did provide one bright spot for Bucknell as the freshman led with eight kills and a .462 attack percentage. The Bison are now 9-18 overall and 3-9 in the Patriot League with one week of play remaining.
Campbell's hitting percentage was not enough to keep her team's mark high, unfortunately. As a team, Bucknell finished the match at .035, while Army (18-8, 9-3 PL) came in at .318. Twice the Bison hit in the negatives and twice the Black Knights hit better than .400. Each of those instances came in the first and third sets, creating the most lopsided results of the evening.
Bucknell kept the score close in the second set as its hitting percentage improved to .167 and Army's fell to .162. Despite those even numbers, the Black Knights remained in control throughout the tight play. Kristen Titley (Coral Gables, Fla./Palmer Trinity School) recorded a kills for 19-18, but that was as close as the score got. Army closed things out by claiming seven of the final nine points.
A block from Campbell and Hannah Young (McConnellsburg, Pa./Broadfording Christian Academy (Md.)) saved one set point in the second, although it hardly disrupted Army's game plan. That turned out to be Bucknell's only block on the night, while Army had seven.
In the first set, Army exploded to a 9-1 lead with some help from Zoe Kreitenberg who had four kills and a block in that opening run. Runs were common for the Black Knights, which rolled for four straight points on four different occasions. The Bison never strung together more than two points and only scored on back-to-back plays three times.
The third set followed a similar trend, although Bucknell did tie the frame at 4-4 with a kill from Titley. That was the closest the Bison came to leading all night. The Black Knights responded with a 13-2 run that put them in comfortable position to cruise to their ninth conference victory and remain in second place in the Patriot League standings.
Jarka led all players with 11 kills for Army, and Kreitenberg and Francine Vasquez finished with nine each. Mary Vaccaro had 33 assists.
In addition to Campbell's eight kills, Titley had five. They were the only two Bison to finish with a positive attack percentage. Kat Tauscher (Washington, D.C./National Cathedral School) and Meghan Wentzel (San Anselmo, Calif./The Branson School) tied with nine assists apiece.
Bucknell will return to action on Friday with a trip to Navy. The Bison will then close out their season at American on Nov. 10.
