Bucknell Wrestling Opens Season Saturday at Navy Classic

LEWISBURG, Pa. –The Bucknell wrestling team will officially open its 2012-13 season Saturday at the Navy Classic. The Bison finished third of seven teams at the 2011 Navy Classic. Seventeen different Bucknell wrestlers are expected to compete at the tournament-style competition.
Saturday's event will begin at 10 a.m. at Navy's Wesley Brown Field House. Bucknell will be joined by The Citadel, Cleveland State, Franklin & Marshall, George Mason, Kent State, host Navy, Ohio and West Virginia.
The Bison had seven placewinners at last year's Navy Classic and four of them (Derrik Russell, Stephen McPeek, Jamie Westwood, Joe Stolfi) are expected to be in action Saturday. Then-senior John Regan had Bucknell's best showing a year ago, winning the 157-pound crown.
While the Navy Classic begins official competition for the Bison, a number of Bucknell wrestlers have already piled up some victories this year. Fifteen different Bison have wrestled unattached at the Clarion Open or Michigan State Open. Freshmen Paul Petrov (5-1) and Vincent Favia (5-1) are tied for first on the team in wins.
Bucknell's Corey Lear, who is ranked 17th nationally at 165 pounds by Amateur Wrestling News, is one of seven ranked wrestlers who are scheduled to compete on Saturday. Lear, who finished fourth at last week's Michigan State Open, was the runner-up at 165 pounds at the 2010 Navy Classic.
Bucknell will be idle for two weeks following the Navy Classic. The Bison will return to action Dec. 1 at the Hoosier Duals. They will face Gardner-Webb, Indiana and Southern Illinois Edwardsville in their first dual matches of the year. Bucknell's first home event is a dual against Oklahoma State Dec. 17 in Sojka Pavilion.
