LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior men's water polo player Brian Barron (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) was named the Bison Athlete of the Week on Monday. The team's second-leading scorer with 36 goals this season, Barron netted 17 goals and dished out six assists in four league games this past weekend. Barron's performance helped the Bison to a 3-1 record with wins over Johns Hopkins, George Washington and No. 16 Princeton.
After being honored during Senior Day ceremonies immediately preceding the game, Barron had a career performance Saturday night in a loss to No. 14 Navy. Barron netted a career-high eight goals and nine points against the Mids as he became the first Bison to score at least eight goals in a game since Josh Watts tallied eight times against Slippery Rock in 1998.
Barron, who earned his first career Bison Athlete of the Week citation, registered multiple goals in each of the four weekend games. He capped the weekend with a team-high four goals in a one-point victory over Princeton. His five-meter penalty shot with just over 30 seconds left proved to be the winning goal for Bucknell, which is 9-10 on the season.
Incredibly, Barron nearly doubled his season goal output this weekend alone. In the campaign's first 15 games he found the back of the net 19 times. He now has 36 goals to rank second on the team, while his 56 points place him third.
Barron's 23-point performance over the weekend boosted his career figure to 202, most among current Bison. He also has 21 steals and 12 ejections drawn to go along with 41 sprints won. Barron captured 12 of 18 sprints over the weekend and ranks third in program history with 126 sprints won.
A 2011 CWPA All-Southern Division First Team selection and a team co-captain, Barron has posted 10 multi-goal outings this year. He is one of five Bison to start all 19 games.
Bucknell and Barron will head west this coming weekend when they play five games at the Santa Clara Rodeo. The Bison will play five teams that show up in this week's national rankings.
