HAMILTON, N.Y. - Lindsay Horbatuck (Avon, Conn./Avon) posted her third double-double of the season and was one of the five Bison in double figures, but the offensive push from Bucknell women's basketball was not enough to keep them from a 73-66 loss to Colgate at Cotterell Court on Wednesday night. The Raiders ended the game on a 25-5 run to come from behind and claim their first Patriot League win of the season.
It took some time for Bucknell (2-15, 0-2 PL) to get its offense going, but once it did the Bison were able to make an interesting game of it. At the 11:32 media timeout, Bucknell trailed 18-8 thanks to Colgate (4-13, 1-1 PL) going on a 14-4 run. The Bison responded with a streak of their own after the break. With an 11-4 run in their favor, the Bison pulled within 22-19 at the next break in play.
Micki Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) had a hand in that successful streak. The freshman was active in the paint and was rewarded with a career-high 10 points after just one half of play. She also drew an assist on an and-one play for Alyssa Dunn (Mason, Ohio/Seven Hills School). With 8:43 to go in the first half, Dunn scored on a fastbreak layup as she received a nice pass in traffic in the paint from Impellizeri. Dunn then turned it into a three-point play to set the score at 22-19.
Bucknell had its most success offensively when it didn't have to contend with the Colgate zone defense. Pushing the pace of play to keep the Raiders from setting up defensively resulted in a handful of buckets for the Bison.
Offensive boards also played to Bucknell's favor as it often left open space in the paint for the Bison to get some second-chance points. Horbatuck turned one offensive rebound into a three-point play and tied the game at 29-29, the closest Bucknell had come to a lead to that point. At halftime Bucknell and Colgate were tied with seven offensive rebounds apiece, but the Bison had an 18-15 overall lead on the glass.
Although Bucknell tied the game once more at 31-31 on a Felicia Mgbada (Edison, N.J./Blair Academy) before halftime, the Bison were unable pull in front. Colgate hung on for a 33-31 advantage at the break.
Bucknell ended the half shooting .529 (13-for-25) from the field. Although that number dipped a bit in the second, the Bison still finished the game at .481 (26-for-54).
Bucknell claimed its first lead of the night early in the second as Shelby Romine (Centreville, Va./Westfield) hit her third 3-pointer of the day. At 19:14, the Bison pulled in front 36-33. The advantage grew slowly but surely over the next few minutes as Romine was able to get good looks at jumpers and still find her teammates in the paint.
Horbatuck was the recipient of several of Romine's passes and she eventually became the third Bison to reach double-figure scoring. The junior, who also led the Bison with 12 rebounds, finished with 13 points.
After looking like they were firmly in control of the action, the Bison began to suffer both offensively and defensively. Colgate forced Bucknell into a pair of shot clock violations and turnovers began to wreak havoc at inopportune times down the stretch. Tricia Oakes turned one of those miscues into a fastbreak layup to bring the Raiders within a single point. Jhazmine Lynch then gave her team back the lead with a long jumper. With 4:10 remaining in the action, Colgate was up 60-59. The Raiders had gone on a 25-5 run. The Bison had committed eight turnovers in the second half and hit just four field goals in the final 8:30.
Romine led all players with 19 points before fouling out. She was 7-for-15 from the field, including 4-for-11 from 3-point distance. Mgbada, Impellizeri and Dunn added 10 points apiece. Horbatuck's 12 boards helped Bucknell to out-rebound Colgate 37-29. It was the first time in 10 games the Bison had more production on the glass than their opponent.
Colgate put five players in double-figure scoring, led by Lynch and Missy Repoli with 14 each. Oakes and Mariah Jones each added 11 points, and Kelly Korkowski totaled 10. Oakes also had 11 rebounds.
Bucknell will return home for its next two games, starting off with Lafayette on Saturday. Tip off against the Leopards at Sojka Pavilion is set for 7 p.m.
