LEWISBURG, Pa. -Sophomore men's water polo player Alex Nowlin (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tesoro) was named the academic year's first Susquehanna Valley Limousine Bison Athlete of the Week, it was announced Monday. Nowlin tallied seven goals and eight assists in two games this past weekend at the Navy Labor Day Open.
The highlight of the weekend for the No. 19-ranked Bison was a 16-10 victory over No. 11 St. Francis (N.Y.) that snapped a 22-game losing streak for Bucknell to the Terriers. Nowlin tallied a team-high eight points on four goals and four assists in that contest. The eight points were the most by a Bison since Richie Hyden tallied nine last Sept. 24 vs. Johns Hopkins. Nowlin also added one steal to help a defense that yielded just six first-half goals in the two weekend games.
Nowlin opened the 2011 campaign with seven points (3g, 4a) in a 21-6 victory over Gannon on Saturday.
With a team-high 15 points through just two games, Nowlin is already more than halfway to his freshman-year total of 25 points.
Bucknell (2-0) will play at home for the first time this season this coming weekend when it hosts the Bison Invitational. The Bison will play four games, but only Sunday's 4:30 p.m. contest against Toronto will count in their record. The Toronto match will air live on Bison Vision
.
