LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sophomore Kasha Scott(Cherry Hills Village, Colo./Cherry Creek) birdied the 17th hole to shoot an even-par 70, helping the women's golf team to a narrow one-shot victory over Rutgers and a repeat of the Bison Invitational championship. The Bison shot 298 as a team in each of the final two rounds to win for the third time in the last 12 months.
The tournament was already pushed back a day due to the torrential rain and flooding in Lewisburg last week, and Sunday's second round was suspended a little less than halfway in due to another thunderstorm. The 15 teams in the field finished their second rounds and then played a full third round in wet conditions on Monday.
Bucknell solved the waterlogged course posting consecutive sub-300 rounds after an opening 310 on Sunday morning. The Bison placed three players in the top 11 individually - all sophomores -- led by Scott's career-best and super-clutch round. After opening with rounds of 79 and 73, Scott was remarkably consistent over the final 18 holes. She made 16 pars, one bogey and one birdie, and the bogey came at the long par-4 eighth, which was statistically the hardest hole on the course, playing well over a stroke over par.
Scott made a birdie, her team-best fifth of the weekend, on the par-4 17th, and then finished her even-par round of 70 with a six-foot putt to save par on No. 18. Scott's previous collegiate-best round was a 72 in this event last year. Her 54-hole total of 222 put her in a two-way tie for fourth place in the 80-player field.
Lauren Bernard (Malvern, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) used a second-round 72 to go with a 77 and 76 to finish in a tie for seventh place. Bridget Wilcox(Bernardsville, N.J./Taft School) posted consistent scores of 76-75-76 and finished up in a tie for 11th place.
Minjoo Lee (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) also posted a 76 in the final round and tied for 22nd place at 232 (78-78-76). Brittany Rendell(Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) rounded out the squad with a 251 total.
Bucknell also entered a four-player "Blue" team that was led by Kelsey Meybin(Midlothian, Va./Saint Gertrude), who posted three consecutive 78s to finish T-26th.
Kortnie Maxoutopoulis of Rutgers was the individual medalist, finishing at 4-over 214 for the tournament (70-73-71). Jade Okamoto of Radford took second at 218, followed by Ann Colligan of Saint Francis (Pa.) at 220. Scott and Ginette Schapira of Lehigh tied for fourth place at 222.
Bucknell completed the 54 holes with a 906 team score, one shot ahead of Rutgers. Seton Hall took third at 917, followed by Lehigh (918), Radford (919), Marshall (920), Hofstra (933), Robert Morris (956), Cleveland State (959), Wagner (978), Saint Francis (Pa.) (981), Kutztown (995), McDaniel (1115) and St. Francis (N.Y.) (1113).
The Bison are back in action in two weeks at the Badger Invitational, hosted by Wisconsin.
