LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell women's golf team kicked off its 2011-12 season a day late due to the heavy rain that pelted Lewisburg last week, and the opening day of the Bison Invitational was halted a bit early due to afternoon thunderstorms. Led by a 76 from sophomore Bridget Wilcox(Bernardsville, N.J./Taft School), Bucknell completed its first round with a team score of 310, and then the lightning and heavy rain stopped play with most groups completing eight holes of round two.
The top of the standings was fairly packed after round one. Bucknell sits in a three-way tie for fifth place alongside Hofstra and Big South rival Radford. Backed by an even-par 70 from first-round co-leader Kortnie Maxoutopouli, Rutgers opened with a 304 and has a two-stroke lead over Seton Hall. Lehigh is third at 307, followed by the trio of teams at 310.
Rounding out the field is Cleveland State in eighth place at 314, followed by Saint Francis (Pa.) at 320, Wagner at 325, Robert Morris at 326, Kutztown at 329, McDaniel at 379 and St. Francis (N.Y.) at 390.
Behind Wilcox's 76, which included a 34 on the back nine, the Bison counted three other scores in the 70s on the damp Bucknell Golf Club course. Lauren Bernard (Malvern, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) shot 77, Minjoo Lee (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) posted a 78 and Kasha Scott (Cherry Hills Village, Colo./Cherry Creek) recorded a 79. Brittany Rendell(Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) added an 84.
Bucknell also sent out a four-player "Blue" team, which combined for a 351 total. Kelsey Meybin(Midlothian, Va./Saint Gertrude) led that group with a 78.
Maxoutopouli and Ann Collier of Saint Francis (Pa.) both shot 70, two shots better than Jade Okimoto of Radford.
