LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's rowing program earned the Patriot League Award of Good Sporting conduct for lending a spare boat to Navy to use in the recent Patriot League Championships. The Mids went on to win the varsity four race in the Bison boat, but Bucknell won the overall team championship for a fifth consecutive year by winning the varsity eight and second varsity eight events.
The boat the Navy varsity four was planning on using suffered damage shortly after launching for a practice row on the morning of the Patriot League Championships. The Bison coaching staff quickly stepped forward to loan their spare boat to the Mids.
"I am confident every coach in the Patriot League would have done the same thing," said Bucknell head coach Stephen Kish. "We just happened to be the only team with a spare boat on our trailer. It would have been a shame if the student-athletes from Navy were not able to compete at the championship."
The Patriot League Award of Good Sporting Conduct recognizes and honors exemplary sporting behavior. All Patriot League student-athletes, coaches, teams as a whole and staff members associated with the intercollegiate athletic program who demonstrate good sporting behavior are eligible for recognition. There is no limit on the number of awards that will be given. Institutions are encouraged to nominate and recognize as many acts of good sporting behavior as are exhibited.
Bucknell's honor is the first time the award has been utilized since Navy captain Andrea Stover was recognized in March of 2008.
