CHERRY HILL, N.J. (Cooper River) – The Bucknell women's rowing lightweight eight has advanced to the Grand Final of the IRA National Championship Regatta for a sixth consecutive year. The Bison finished third in their heat Friday morning and then earned the Grand Final berth with a runner-up showing in the afternoon repechage.
The top two boats in Bucknell's morning heat automatically advanced to the Grand Final. However, the Bison finished third behind Stanford and Wisconsin, the top two finishers in the 2010 Grand Final and the winners of each of the last two IRA lightweight eight titles. Bucknell then needed a top-two showing in the afternoon repechage against Georgetown and MIT and it placed second behind the Hoyas.
The Bison will be joined in Sunday's final by Radcliffe, Princeton, Stanford, Wisconsin and Georgetown. This is the fifth consecutive year the same six-boat field has advanced to the Grand Final. Wisconsin has won three crowns, Stanford one and Bucknell one since the Bison starting competing at the IRA Regatta in 2006.
Bucknell has had plenty of success at IRAs in recent years with the lightweight eight finishing sixth in 2006, first in 2007, fourth in 2008, second in 2009 and fifth in 2010. Additionally, the lightweight four rowed at the event for the first time last June and took home a bronze medal.
