LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell seniors Stephanie Frank (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) and Carol Schoenecker (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) as well as junior Jillian O'Mara (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Bainbridge), were named to the inaugural 11-person Academic All-Patriot League Women's Rowing Team, the league office announced Wednesday. The Bison's three honorees were the most in the league.
To be eligible for the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor. The Academic All-Patriot League Team has been added for all sports in the 2010-11 seasons to honor additional student-athletes who excel both on and off the field.
Schoenecker earned her first career All-Patriot League award last week, days after leading Bucknell and the varsity eight to a sixth consecutive Patriot League title. She and teammate Victoria Dudley became just the second and third rowers in league history to be part of four varsity eights that earned PL Boat of the Year honors. Schoenecker rowed in the three seat at the Patriot League Championships. She is a two-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member who is a member of the Black Student Union, a member of the campus orchestra's first violin section and is part of the Alumni Mentor Program, which advises potential study abroad students.
On Tuesday, Schoenecker, who owns a 3.59 grade-point average while majoring in history and classics and minoring in African studies, won the 'Ray Bucknell Diversity Award at the Bison Club's annual Senior Recognition Dinner. The award is presented to the Bucknell senior student-athletes who have worked to eliminate attitudes and actions that have separated, excluded or marginalized people in the past and has facilitated true understanding and recognition among multiple campus and Lewisburg constituencies.
A two-time First Team All-Patriot League choice, O'Mara rowed in the seven seat of the varsity eight at the Patriot League Championships. A three-year varsity eight member, O'Mara was a 2010 CRCA National Scholar-Athlete and she is a multi-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. She owns an impressive 3.91 cumulative GPA while majoring in biology and French, and she posted a 4.0 GPA in the fall 2010 semester.
Frank is a member of Bucknell's varsity lightweight eight, which is ranked sixth nationally, according to the April 27 USRowing Collegiate Poll. This is Frank's second straight year in the lightweight eight. She has helped the boat to a third-place finish at the Knecht Cup and to a bronze medal against No. 1 Princeton and No. 4 Radcliffe. Like O'Mara, Frank was a 2010 CRCA National Scholar-Athlete and she has been a member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. Frank owns a 3.75 cumulative GPA while majoring in Spanish and international relations.
MIT's Theresa Saxton-Fox was named the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year, an award 2010 Bucknell graduate Elizabeth Regan earned last year.
