LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)), a member of the Bison men's water polo team, received a special award at the University's annual Senior Athletic Awards Banquet, sponsored by the Bison Club and held at the Elaine Langone Center on Tuesday, May 3.
Hyden won the Bradley N. Tufts Award, presented to senior athletes "in recognition of exceptional athletic achievement and contributions to Bucknell Athletics." Hyden shared the award with Lauren Lucido of the women's tennis team, who was the female selection.
In addition to Hyden, several other student-athletes were honored at the banquet, including the winners of the Christy Mathewson Award, given to the most outstanding athletes in the senior class.
A Bucknell-record three-time Honorable Mention All-American, Hyden was also a three-time first-team all-conference selection, becoming the first Bison to accomplish that feat since the mid-1980s. He finished his career seventh at Bucknell in goals (232), fifth in assists (161) and sixth in points (393), becoming the first player to join any of those top-10 lists since Kevin Permisohn in 2000.
As a senior, Hyden led the team with 89 points on 52 goals and a team-high 37 assists. He also drew a team-high 57 ejections, a figure that ranks fifth on the Bison single-season list, and recorded 20 steals while seeing action in all 29 contests.
Hyden, who is currently playing professional water polo in Spain, currently holds the program record for ejections drawn with 186.
A team co-captain in 2010, Hyden expects to finish his degree in the fall after taking the spring semester off due to his overseas professional obligations.
