LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior Kandis Canonica (Burlingame, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep), a member of the Bison women's water polo team, received a special award at the University's annual Senior Athletic Awards Banquet, sponsored by the Bison Club and held at the Elaine Langone Center on Tuesday, May 3.
Canonica won the Lee S. "Bud" Ranck Memorial Award, presented to senior athletes "for outstanding spirit and contributions to the Bucknell athletic program." Canonica shared the award with Darryl Shazier of the men's basketball team, who was the male selections.
In addition to Canonica, several other student-athletes were honored at the banquet, including the winners of the Christy Mathewson Award, given to the most outstanding athletes in the senior class.
A 2010 Honorable Mention All-American, Canonica earned her fourth career all-conference honor last week when she was named First Team Collegiate Water Polo Association All-Western Division. It was her second straight first-team honor after two second-team citations.
Bucknell's all-time leading scorer with 423 points, Canonica led the Bison in scoring as a senior with 88 points on 43 goals and 45 assists. She also posted a team-high 50 ejections drawn and 15 steals in her final season.
The only player to post three 100-point campaigns, Canonica finished her career with 65 more points than previous record-holder Aubrey Rowe (358). She broke the career assists record as a junior and her final tally of 221 was 79 greater than Adrienne Schober's previous standard (142). Additionally, Canonica scored her 200th goal in her final career contest, becoming the fourth Bison to reach that plateau.
A left-hander, Canonica registered at least one point in 27 of 28 games in 2011 and in 57 of her final 58 appearances.
After totaling eight goals, six assists, seven ejections drawn and three steals at this past weekend, Canonica was named to the Eastern Championship All-Tournament Team for the second straight year, making her Bucknell's first two-time honoree since Meagan Gins in 2006 and 2007.
Canonica will graduate among the program's all-time leaders in seven categories: points (1st, 423), goals (4th, 202), assists (1st, 221), ejections drawn (3rd, 185), shots (4th, 461), games played (t-9th, 126) and games started (t-3rd, 122).
