LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior Darryl Shazier (Newport News, Va./Menchville), a First Team All-Patriot League point guard and one of the men's basketball team's all-time assist leaders, received a special award at the University's annual Senior Athletic Awards Banquet, sponsored by the Bison Club and held in the Terrace Room on campus on May 3.
Shazier won the Lee S. "Bud" Ranck Award, presented to a student-athlete for outstanding spirit and contributions to the Bucknell athletic program. Shazier shared the award with Kandis Canonica, the all-time leading scorer in Bucknell women's water polo history.
In addition to Shazier and Canonica, several other student-athletes were honored at the banquet, including the winners of the Christy Mathewson Award, given to the most outstanding athletes in the senior class. Two-time Patriot League Women's Soccer Player of the Year Christa Matlack and two-time All-America wrestler Kevin LeValley won the Mathewson Awards.
Shazier was a team co-captain this past season and helped lead the Bison to a 25-9 record, a Patriot League title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
A First Team All-Patriot League selection in 2010-11, Shazier led the Patriot League in assists at 5.4 per game, and his 185-to-50 assist-to-turnover ratio ranked No. 2 in the nation. He also averaged 8.3 points per game and ranked among the conference leaders in steals.
Shazier played in 126 career games, one shy of the school record, and his 498 career assists ranked fourth on Bucknell's all-time list. His 185 assists this season were third-most on Bucknell's single-season list, just 12 shy of the record.
Shazier was named to the Riley Wallace All-America Team, made up of eight seniors who were a major part of their team's success by contributing in all phases of the game without a lot of national attention.
Bucknell is a highly-selective, privately endowed liberal arts institution with an enrollment of approximately 3,500 undergraduate students.
