LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell men's tennis placed a league-best two members on the inaugural Academic All-Patriot League Team as Anton Kovic (Montreal, Quebec/Milton Academy (Mass.)) and Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) were recognized for their success on and off the court. With the award, Zimmer is the only player to be named to both the Patriot League's all-academic and all-league teams.
The award is not the first time Kovic and Zimmer have been paired up. The duo spent much of the spring season playing at together at No. 1 doubles where they tallied an 8-7 record. Zimmer's performance on the tennis court earned him Second Team All-Patriot League accolades yesterday. The sophomore led all Bison in singles victories at 17-10 and finished 12-12 overall in doubles.
Off the court, Zimmer has maintained a 3.44 cumulative grade-point average while majoring in management. A multi-term member of the Bucknell Dean's List and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, he also serves as secretary to the treasurer for Sigma Alpha Epsilon and has worked as an accounting assistant in the summer of 2010.
Zimmer is one of only two sophomores to be named to the all-academic team along with Lehigh's Andrew Krentz.
Kovic's spot on the Academic All-Patriot League Team came thanks to a 3.5 cumulative GPA while majoring in both economics and history. A native of Montreal, Quebec, who is fluent in English, French, Spanish and Serbian, Kovic earned a Certificate of Comparative Political and Economic Systems from the Georgetown University Engalitcheff Institute in the summer of 2009. He later completed a Financial Sales and Analytics internship at Bloomberg where he has since accepted a full-time offer of employment for after graduation.
During his career in the Orange and Blue, Kovic posted a 58-56 doubles record, which ranks fifth all-time at Bucknell. The senior co-captain is also tied for 12th all-time in combined victories (87-109). Despite missing time due to injury in his final campaign, Kovic finished 11-13 in doubles while playing exclusively at the No. 1 spot in duals.
Also earning a spot on the Academic All-Patriot League Team were Phil Bernasek of Colgate, Chris Das of Holy Cross, Lehigh's Krentz and Nick Briger of Navy. Birger was selected as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
The Academic All-Patriot League Team has been added for all sports beginning in the 2010-11 season to honor additional student-athletes who excel both on and off the field. The men's tennis team has six student-athletes to equal the size of the sport's All-Patriot League first team. Student-athletes must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and be a starter or a key reserve. Award winners are determined by a vote of the league's sports information directors who cannot vote for their own athletes.
