LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell men's track and field's Alex Prieto (Princeton Junction, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro South) claimed his second consecutive Patriot League Rookie of the Week citation, and Ted Heitzman (Elysburg, Pa./Southern Columbia) was named the league's Field Athlete of the Week for the third time this spring, the league announced on Monday. The Bison men have earned the nod for the top field athlete in each of the last three weeks.
Heitzman continued to impress in the javelin throw, finishing fourth in the college championship flight at the Penn Relays last Saturday. The junior registered a throw of 230 feet, 10 inches, his second meet this year at better than 230 feet and his fifth in which he met the IC4A Championship standard.
Heitzman, who is the current program record holder in the javelin (237-8), has been named the Patriot League Field Athlete of the Week three times this spring. In five weeks in which Bucknell was eligible for weekly awards, the Bison have earned the field honor four times.
Prieto won the triple jump at the Bloomsburg Maroon & Gold Open last Saturday. It was the rookie's first individual win of the spring season, coming with a mark of 46-8. The career-best effort puts Prieto in a tie for ninth all-time at Bucknell. He has now improved his triple jump performance in each of his five outdoor meets, starting at 42-10 ¼ in March.
The award is the second straight for Prieto, who earned last week's honor after earning a pair of top-10 finishes at the Bucknell Team Challenge and recording personal bests in both the triple jump and long jump. Including the indoor season, he has been named the Rookie of the Week three times.
Bucknell will return to the track this weekend for the Patriot League Championships May 6-7 at Easton, Pa. The Bison are attempting to defend their team title from a year ago, when they took the championship trophy for the first time since 1991.
