LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell baseball pitchers Ryan Ebner (Sinking Spring, Pa./The Hill School) and Alex Cillo (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) combined on a 16-inning shutout of Navy in a 1-0 marathon victory over the Mids in the first game of the best-of-three Patriot League Semifinal Series this past Saturday. On Tuesday, they were named to the CollegeBaseball360.com Weekly Honor Roll.
Patriot League Pitcher of the Year Ebner started the game and pitched eight-plus shutout innings before Cillo relieved him and logged eight shutout innings of his own. Bucknell, which lost the best-of-three series to the top-seeded Mids, won the game 1-0 thanks to an RBI single by Bob Donato in the top of the 16th inning, ending the longest contest in Bucknell history, surpassing a pair of 15-inning games in the mid-1970s.
Cillo, who earned the win to improve to 4-1 on the season, allowed just six hits and two walks while striking out three in his career-high eight innings of work. Ebner's numbers were slightly better as he yielded five hits and walked one while striking out five.
A Second Team All-Patriot League selection, Cillo's previous career high for innings was 4.0. He finished the season with a team-best 1.96 ERA in 46.0 innings out of the bullpen. He allowed just two earned runs over his final 43.1 innings (0.42 ERA), spanning 16 appearances.
Ebner earned First Team All-Patriot League honors to go along with his Pitcher of the Year trophy. He helped Bucknell to wins in each of his final 10 starts and he finished the 2011 campaign with a 6-1 mark and a 3.53 ERA. He posted a team-high 54 strikeouts and held opponents in three or fewer earned runs in nine of his final 10 starts, eight of which were at least 5.1 innings in length.
Chris Elder (Oral Roberts), Buck Farmer (Georgia Tech), Nolan Fontana (Florida), Brian Radziewski (Miami), Maxx Tissenbaum (Stony Brook), Andrew Triggs (USC), Josh Turley (Baylor), Mo Wiley (Houston) and Garrett Wittels (Florida International) were also honored this week by CB360.
Cillo and Ebner led the Bison to a 25-28 overall record in 2011, matching their win total from 2010 when they advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Bucknell was the fourth seed in the Patriot League Tournament after posting a 10-10 regular-season league mark. The Bison qualified for the postseason for the fourth consecutive year, and the sixth time in the last seven years.
