BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Kandis Canonica (Burlingame, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) scored a team-high three goals and the Bucknell women's water polo team overcame a two-goal halftime deficit to defeat George Washington, 10-8, and finish in seventh place at the Eastern Championship Sunday morning. The Bison were the 10th seed entering the 11-team tournament, while the Colonials were the eighth seed.
Bucknell (13-18) finished the Eastern Championship with a 2-2 record as it also defeated Brown in an opening-round game on Friday morning. The Bison suffered losses to eventual fourth-place finisher Hartwick and sixth-place Harvard.
Bucknell trailed George Washington 5-3 at the half on Sunday, but outscored the Colonials by a 7-3 margin in the second half, including 3-1 in the fourth quarter.
Canonica's three goals pushed her career total to 202, making her the fourth player in program history to tally at least 200 goals. She also finished her career with 423 points, 65 more than anyone else in school history.
Amanda Skonezney (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Krystle Morgan (Rowland Heights, Calif./Rosary) each contributed two goals in the win, while Julianne Valdes (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) totaled one goal and two assists. Morgan finished the weekend with seven goals and two assists after scoring just five points during the regular season.
Brittany Connell (Montebello, Calif./Montebello) and Rena Heim (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) split time in goal with Connell stopping two shots in the first half and Heim recorded four saves in the second in her first action of the weekend.
Sunday's contest marked the final game in the careers of seniors Canonica, Meghan McNally and Haley Prickett. That trio combined for four goals, two assists, two steals and three ejections drawn against George Washington.
Sunday's victory helped the Bison finish the 2011 campaign 1-2 against the Colonials, avenging a pair of regular-season losses.
