LEWISBURG, Pa. - Marist scored at least one run in each of the first seven innings and capitalized on 16 walks and two hit by pitches as it defeated Bucknell, 13-1, in non-league baseball action Tuesday afternoon at a cold and blustery Depew Field. David Duffett and Will Mooney were each 2-for-2 for the Bison, who fell to 12-17 on the year.
Marist (20-6) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first three innings without the aid of a hit as the Red Foxes drew eight walks and were hit by a pitch once during that stretch. All four runs scored on ground outs.
Marist, which left 18 runners on base, sent 11 hitters to the plate and scored five runs in the fourth inning to take a 9-0 advantage.
Eight different Bison pitchers saw action in the game with freshman Jack McLinden and Eric Jarrett holding the Red Foxes scoreless in the final two innings. Starter Taylor Runge suffered the loss as he fell to 0-2 on the year.
Plenty of younger Bucknell players got the chance to get in the game as head coach Gene Depew made wholesale substitutions in his lineup in the sixth and seventh innings. By the end of the game, freshmen occupied six of the nine positions in the batting order.
Third baseman Duffett and his seventh-inning replacement Mooney combined to go 4-for-4 with one run scored. Duffett had a double and a single, while Mooney doubled in the seventh and tripled in the ninth, eventually scoring Bucknell's lone run on an infield single by Matt Busch. Duffett, who extended his hitting streak to six games, was the only member of the starting lineup with a hit, although the Bison finished with six hits overall in the contest.
Eric Helmrich, who was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and a fourth-inning triple, and Bryce Nugent, who was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI, collected four of Marist's 10 hits in the game. Helmrich was on base in each of his five at bats as he drew a team-high three walks.
The Red Foxes used two pitchers in the game as starter Chris Bielak (1-1) pitched seven shutout innings, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out four. Chris Thorsen pitched the final two frames and the Bison touched him for three hits and one run.
Bucknell, which wrapped up a stretch where it played nine of 11 games at Depew Field, will travel to Holy Cross for a four-game Patriot League series this weekend. Doubleheaders both Saturday and Sunday at Fitton Field will begin at noon.
