PRINCETON, N.J. – Bucknell's all-time leading scorer Kandis Canonica (Burlingame, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) scored a season-high seven points on four goals and three assists and the Bison scored a season high in goals as they defeated St. Francis (N.Y.), 16-12, in women's water polo action Sunday morning at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool. Nine different Bucknell players netted goals as the Bison outscored the Terriers 10-7 in the second half.
Bucknell (10-10) finished the weekend with a 1-2 record after falling to No. 7 Michigan and No. 18 Princeton on Saturday.
The Bison trailed 4-3 after the first quarter, but outscored St. Francis 3-1 in the second frame to take a one-goal lead into halftime. Bucknell then netted four goals in the third quarter and six more in the fourth to reach double figures in wins on the season.
Canonica led the offense with her seven points, the most by a Bison player this year. Hallie Kennan (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) added five points on three goals and two assists, while Julianne Valdes (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) scored one goal and dished out a season-high three assists.
Bucknell, which had previously scored 15 goals in a win over La Verne last month, was an extremely efficient 7-for-7 in six-on-five opportunities. Also, senior Meghan McNally (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) converted a five-meter penalty shot for her first goal since the Marist game on March 16.
In addition to the season-best offensive output, the Bison recorded a season-high 17 steals. Kennan and goalie Brittany Connell (Montebello, Calif./Montebello) led the way with three apiece. Connell also had four saves while playing the first half. Rena Heim (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) played the second half in goal and stopped six shots.
Haley Prickett (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar) posted one goal and two assists on the day as she reached the 100-goal plateau for her career. She is the third current Bucknell player to score 100 goals, joining Canonica (184) and Kennan (107).
The Bison will return home next weekend for the first time since February and will play four games at Kinney Natatorium against Indiana, Harvard, Maryland and George Washington. Sunday's games vs. the Terrapin and Colonials will have live video broadcasts on Bison Vision.
