BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Kandis Canonica (Burlingame, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep), Heather Smith (Redwood City, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) and Krystle Morgan (Rowland Heights, Calif./Rosary) netted three goals apiece and Bucknell scored eight goals in each half as it defeated Brown, 16-11, in the first round of the Eastern Championship Friday morning at Indiana's Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center. The win sends the 10th-seeded Bison to the quarterfinals, where they will face second-seeded Hartwick at 6 p.m. Friday evening.
According to the seeds, Bucknell's (12-16) win over seventh-seeded Brown was an upset, but the Bison led nearly wire-to-wire and exploded for six fourth-quarter goals to turn a one-goal lead into the final five-goal margin of victory.
Morgan and Canonica both tallied two assists to go along with their three goals. Morgan, who has only played in five games this year due to injury, had just five points (4g, 1a) during the regular season.
Stephanie Ovalle (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick), Julianne Valdes (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) and Hallie Kennan (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) added two goals apiece as Bucknell had six multi-goal scorers in the contest. The 16 goals equaled the second-most this season by the Bison.
Bucknell had to overcome a number of man-advantage chances by Brown, which drew 13 ejections. The Bison had just six ejections drawn.
Brittany Connell (Montebello, Calif./Montebello) played the entire game in cage and stopped seven shots.
Bucknell's victory avenged a regular-season loss to the Bears. Brown, which had won six of the last seven meetings between the teams, defeated the Bison 10-6 at the ECAC Championship in February.
Joanna Wohlmuth and Kate Woods scored four goals apiece to lead the Bears in the scoring column.
Bucknell, which lost by a 14-9 margin to nationally ranked Hartwick two weeks ago at Kinney Natatorium, will try to advance to the semifinals of the Eastern Championship for the second time in program history later this evening.
