HAMILTON, N.Y. – Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) became the Bucknell women's tennis all-time leader in victories with a career record of 162-69, helping the Bison defeat Colgate 6-1 in Hamilton, N.Y., on Saturday morning. Lucido won both her matches in convincing fashion, taking down her Raiders opponents 8-3 in doubles and ultimately defeating Stephanie Bender 6-0, 6-1 at first singles to overtake the record.
With the two wins, Lucido passes Veronica Brown, who closed out her career in 2006 with 161 victories. The current Bison has now won eight straight singles matches, bringing her career record to 83-35, which ranks second on the program ledger. Lucido, who is a three-time All-Patriot League selection, is also second in doubles having won 79 career matches to with only 34 losses.
Lucido and partner Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) were the first off the courts after defeating Colgate's Alex Petrini and Stephanie Brown, 8-3. The Bison snagged the doubles point with an equally convincing 8-2 win by Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and Elena Vidrascu (Rochester, N.Y./Sutherland) at the No. 3 position.
With singles play underway, Lucido was again the first won off the court after making quick work of Bender. The senior allowed just one game to her Raider foe. Lucido has won each of her last 11 singles matches against Patriot League opponents, a streak that goes back to April 11, 2009.
Dwojewski did not give much of a chance to Jen Marquit at No. 5 singles, winning 6-0, 6-0. That clinched the team victory for Bucknell, although Vidrascu had to put in some extra work to put her teammate in position to seal the deal. After winning the first set 6-2 over Brown, Vidrascu fell 6-4 in the second. Despite seeing her lead slip away, the freshman rebounded in the deciding frame. A 6-2 third-set win claimed the point in favor of the Orange and Blue.
Coming from behind to close things out in three sets were Iepuras and Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor). Rottkamp defeated Kelsey Shea, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 at third singles. Iepuras was the final winner for Bucknell, defeating Petrini, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Bucknell's next test will be against Army. The Bison host the Black Knights April 9 at the Varsity Tennis Courts at 10 a.m.
