LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell baseball team batted around and scored five runs in the first inning en route to a 7-3 victory over Shippensburg Wednesday afternoon at Depew Field. Despite plenty of wet weather in the Lewisburg area all day Tuesday and Wednesday morning, the game was able to be played thanks to the two-year-old FieldTurf playing surface.
Drew Constable (2-for-2) and Doug Shribman (2-for-4) had two hits apiece for the Bison, who posted 12 hits and improved to 14-20 on the season and 5-5 at home.
Constable got things started in the first inning with a single up the middle. Two batters later Shribman singled. Both scored on a hard-hit single to center by freshman Brett Ashley that was misplayed by center fielder A.J. Czap, allowing both runners to score. A two-out RBI double by Bob Donato plated Ashley and made it 3-0, while Matt Lamore followed with a two-run double to cap the first-inning scoring at 5-0.
The Bison tacked on a run in the second when Constable led off and was hit by a pitch. He moved to third on a single to right by David Duffett that was booted by hard-charging right fielder David McKolosky. Shribman then followed with a medium fly ball to left that scored Constable. It was Shribman's 32nd RBI of the season and 136th of his career, good for second in program history.
Bucknell used 10 pitchers in the game and none yielded more than one hit. Shippensburg (14-18) finished with just four hits in the game and had more than one baserunner in an inning on just two occasions (7th & 9th innings). The Raiders were set down in order in six different innings, thanks in part to a pair of double plays and a caught stealing.
Shippensburg got on the board in the seventh when Bucknell's seventh pitcher, Taylor Runge, walked leadoff hitter Ben Miller and Pat Kregeloh followed with a two-run home run to right center. Tyler Uphouse followed with another walk and later scored on a balk by Dan Weigel, who relieved Runge.
Bucknell added an additional run in the eighth when Gerry Runyan and Scott Reed connected on back-to-back two-out doubles.
Shippensburg used five pitchers in the contest, but the Bison did most of their damage against Cam Richardson, who pitched three innings and allowed seven hits, six runs and three walks while striking out two. The four relievers gave up five of Bucknell's 12 hits.
Daniel Hart (1-0) earned his first win of the season for the Bison by pitching a scoreless first inning.
Bucknell will return to Patriot League play this weekend when it travels to Annapolis, Md., for a four-game series at Navy. Doubleheaders both Saturday and Sunday will begin at noon.
