Ohio
Wide, glassy, amber river
Drifting, flowing, silently
Large, stately, elegant houses
Guard the rich, green banks
The silence suddenly interrupted
By the cry, "Attention, Row!"
A surge of water
The clunk of oars
The splash of blades
Three large, proud hulls
Spring through the water
As if sparked by an electric shock
Eight tired lungs
Heave at once
As legs strain for more
Propelled to give
And give, and give
By the coxswain's mighty call
As the end approaches, the tension rises
And we ask ourselves,
"Can we give just a little bit more?"
Just five strokes to the finish line
Within seconds
The race is done
As bodies collapse
Lungs pull for air
But above exhaustion rises
A thrill, elation, happiness
Shared by nine young women
Imperceptibly, a smile spreads
Through all from bow to stern
From accomplishment and unity
We're the crew that finished second
