NINETY-SIX, S.C. -- Freshman Lauren Bernard (Malvern, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) shot a 3-over-par 75 and is just a shot off the individual lead, but the Bison women's golf team struggled on a few holes on Monday and posted an opening-round 321 at the Big South Championship, presented by Musco Lighting, at The Patriot Club. Bucknell sits in a four-way tie for fourth place with two rounds to play.
Bucknell was seeded No. 1 coming into the event and joins Radford, High Point and Winthrop at 321. Pre-tournament favorite Coastal Carolina, ranked No. 40 nationally, posted a 301 to open up an 11-stroke lead over defending champion Charleston Southern. Gardner-Webb is in third place at 316.
Bernard jumped out to a quick start with a birdie at No. 1 and added another at the 11th hole. She made nothing worse than bogey and posted a 75, her best round of the spring and second-best in relation to par in her career.
Bernard was one of five players in the field to shoot 75, and she is just one stroke behind first-round leader Brittany Henderson of Coastal Carolina. She was the only Bison to break 80, however. Junior Minjoo Lee (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) and freshman Kasha Scott (Cherry Hills Village, Colo./Cherry Creek) both shot 81, senior Katie Jurenovich (Warren, Ohio/Howland) posted an 84, and freshman Bridget Wilcox (Bernardsville, N.J./Taft School) shot 85.
The Big South will announce its all-conference and all-academic teams later on Monday evening at its annual tournament banquet. Round two gets underway on Tuesday morning.
