Shribman Hits Two Home Runs, But Bucknell Baseball Swept by Holy Cross, 6-5 & 13-7

WORCESTER, Mass. - Bucknell's Doug Shribman hit two home runs and drove in six runs in game two of Sunday's baseball doubleheader at Holy Cross' Fitton Field, but the Crusaders swept the Bison, winning by scores of 6-5 and 13-7. Holy Cross won three out of four in the weekend series that featured three contests decided by three runs or less.
The Crusaders, on Sunday, scored eight of their 19 runs in the two games in the first inning as Bucknell was forced to battle from behind the whole day.
Holy Cross (15-16-1, 3-5 PL) scored five runs in the first two innings of game one. The big blow was a two-out, two-run home run by Stephen Wadsworth, who had five hits on the day and drove in six runs after a 4-for-4 performance in game two.
Bison starter Trey Frahler (1-6), who was saddled with the loss, settled down and retired the side in order in the third and fourth innings and yielded just two hits over his final four innings of work.
Bucknell (13-20, 2-6 PL) came back and evened the score in the top of the fifth. Bob Donato, who hit a home run for the second consecutive day in game two, doubled home two runs in the second, while an RBI single in the fifth by David Duffett brought the Bison to within two at 5-3. A bases-loaded walk to Scott Reed knocked starter Nate Koneski from the game and then reliever John Colella promptly hit Travis Clark, allowing the tying run to score.
Holy Cross, however, capitalized on a Bucknell error in the bottom of the fifth to re-take the lead. Leadoff hitter Jack Laurendeau reached on a fielding error, moved to second on a sac bunt and then scored what proved to be the winning run on a single through the left side by Eric Oxford.
Colella pitched the final 2.2 innings and yielded just two hits to even his record at 2-2 on the year.
In game two, Shribman provided the majority of the Bison offense with a grand slam in the third and a two-run shot in the seventh. However, Holy Cross scored five runs in the first inning and totaled 17 hits against five Bucknell pitchers to earn the win.
Shribman, who is already Bucknell's all-time home run leader, now has 11 homers this year and has now driven in 31 runs. He now ranks second in program history in RBIs with 135. Shribman has hit five home runs and driven in 14 runs in his last six games played at Fitton Field, dating back to last year's Patriot League Tournament.
The 5 through 8 hitters in the Crusader lineup provided the majority of the damage in game two as Wadsworth (4-for-4), Josh Olson (2-for-4), Alex Maldanado (3-for-5) and Mike Ahmed (2-for-5) were a combined 11-for-18 with 12 RBIs and six runs scored.
Bucknell trailed just 9-6 entering the eighth inning of game two, but Holy Cross was able to plate four runs in the bottom of the frame to break the game open.
Jack Boehm (2-2) suffered the loss for the Bison as he lasted just one batter into the second inning. Reliever Josh Hauser (1-0) earned the win for Holy Cross as he pitched 2.1 innings of one-hit relief.
Leadoff hitter Drew Constable had a hit in both ends of the doubleheader to extend his hitting streak to a team-best five games.
Bucknell will return home for a non-league game on Wednesday when it hosts Shippensburg at Depew Field at 3:30 p.m.
