LEXINGTON, Va. - Doug Shribman homered three times and took sole possession of Bucknell's all-time home run record during the Bison baseball team's doubleheader split with VMI Saturday afternoon at Gray-Minor Stadium. Bucknell won game one 4-2 behind a pair of Shribman homers, while the Keydets claimed game two, 7-3. Shribman now has 33 career home runs and a team-high six this season.
Bucknell (3-7) also received solid starting pitching in both games as game one starter Ryan Ebner and game two starter Jack Boehm combined to throw 12.1 innings, yield nine hits and allow four runs, just two of which were earned. Ebner (1-1) was especially effective, allowing three hits and one run in his 7.0 innings of work.
Shribman, however, was the story of game one as he hit two solo home runs, one in the first and one in the ninth, and collected three of Bucknell's four hits and drove in three of the four runs. A run-scoring double in the sixth staked the Bison to a 3-1 lead and proved to be the winning run.
Bucknell led the seven-inning game two 3-0 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, but VMI (6-6-1) sent 11 hitters to the plate and scored seven runs, six of which were unearned thanks to three Bison errors. To that point in the contest the Keydets had recorded just three hits and had no more than four hitters step to the plate in any inning.
Shribman hit his third home run of the day in the top of the sixth. It was a two-run shot that extended the Bison lead to 3-0.
Gerry Runyan was 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the nightcap. It was his fourth multi-hit game of the season, tying David Duffett for team-high honors.
Thanks to his three home runs Saturday, Shribman broke a tie with former teammate Andrew Brouse at the top of the Bison record books. Shribman now has 27 home runs in the last two years, and 15 in his last 20 games, dating back to last year.
Bucknell and VMI will conclude their four-game series with a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
