LEWISBURG, Pa. - Junior right-hander Jack Boehm continued his recent string of impressive starts as he pitched a complete game and allowed just four hits and one run, lifting the Bucknell baseball team to a 2-1 victory over Longwood in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader at chilly Depew Field. The Lancers then avoided a four-game series sweep with a 6-2 victory that featured 14 hits in game two.
Bucknell's 3-1 weekend brought its record to 11-11 on the season. The Bison have won 11 of their last 17 games and their season ERA is now down to a respectable 6.11 after a difficult start to the campaign.
Bucknell finished with 12 hits in the doubleheader. Drew Constable (3-for-6) and Scott Reed (3-for-7) accounted for half of the hits. Constable has now hit in eight straight games. Doug Shribman, who was walked four times on the day, had singles in each end of the twinbill to extend his hitting streak to seven games.
Boehm's (2-0) game one pitching allowed two first-inning runs to stand as the only runs the Bison would need as he pitched a season-high 7.0 innings and allowed one or fewer earned runs for the fourth consecutive start. He now has a 3.38 ERA and has yielded just three earned runs in his last 22.2 innings over four starts.
Boehm retired the last 11 hitters he faced and permitted more than one baserunner in only the third inning, when Robby Newman led off with a double and was driven home on a two-out double by Matt Dickason.
Longwood's (18-10) Matt Gwaltney nearly matched Boehm pitch for pitch after a rocky first inning. Bucknell managed just four baserunners after its two-run first inning as Gwaltney pitched 6.0 innings, allowing five hits, two runs and two walks while striking out five.
The Bison scored their runs in the first inning when Gerry Runyan drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a Shribman single through the left side. Cleanup hitter Reed followed with a single the other way, plating Runyan and moving Shribman to third. Constable then flew out to right, allowing Shribman to tag up and trot home.
Sophomore Marcus Garone (0-2) made his first start of the year on the mound in game two for the Bison, but he was touched for seven hits and three runs in 3.1 innings of work. He left with the score tied 2-2, but a runner on third base that was his responsibility came in to score on a ground out.
Dan Goldstein relieved Garone in the fourth and retired six of the first seven hitters he faced, but an RBI double by Dustin Sollars made the score 4-2 and knocked him from the game. The first hitter Alex Cillo faced (Brant Jones) followed with a two-run single. Cillo settled down after that, allowing just two more hits and striking out three in 2.2 innings of work.
Cillo and Daniel Hart, who pitched a scoreless ninth inning, allowed just three Lancers to reach base in the final three innings and did not face more than four hitters in any frame.
The Lancers left 10 runners on base in game two against the four Bucknell hurlers.
The Bison had their share of opportunities to score as they had at least two baserunners in five of the nine innings. However, two caught stealings and a pair of double plays slowed down a few rallies.
Bucknell's lone runs in the contest came in the third when Runyan hit a deep triple to right-center field, plating Corey Furman and Bob Donato to give the Bison a 2-1 advantage. Runyan ranks second on the team with a career-high 18 RBIs this season.
Justin Lacy was Longwood's top hitter in the doubleheader, going 5-for-8 with two doubles. He collected nearly one-third of the Lancers 18 hits in the twinbill.
The Bison, who will open Patriot League play next weekend at Depew Field against Lafayette, will head to Syracuse, N.Y., to play a doubleheader at Le Moyne on Tuesday, March 29.
