LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell freshman women's water polo player Julianne Valdes (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Western Division Rookie of the Week, it was announced by the league office Tuesday. It is the second honor of the season for Valdes, who was cited as both the Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week on Feb. 15.
The Bison's second-leading scorer with 29 goals and 44 points this season, Valdes totaled six goals, four assists, nine ejections drawn, five steals and one field block last week during Bucknell's final five games of a seven-game spring break trip to Florida.
Valdes recorded at least one goal in four of the five contests and registered four multi-point outings as the Bison went 2-3 with three ranked opponents on their schedule.
With nine ejections drawn last week, Valdes now leads the team with 24 on the year, one ahead of senior All-American Kandis Canonica. She is also among the team leaders with 14 steals.
Thanks to a 4-3 record on its trip to California, Bucknell is now 9-8 this season. The Bison will next be in action the first weekend of April at Princeton when they face fellow Western Division opponent Michigan and the host Tigers.
