WILLIAMSBURG, Pa. -- Led by a 77 from senior Katie Jurenovich, the Bucknell women's golf team overcame high winds and grueling travel to post an outstanding opening round of 319 Saturday at the C&F Bank Intercollegiate at Ford's Colony CC. The Bison stand in eighth place in a talented field of 22 teams, but they are only four shots out of third place.
Among the teams Bucknell bested on Saturday was Penn State, a first in program history and another milestone in what has been an outstanding 2010-11 season so far. The Nittany Lions shot 322 and are in ninth place, three back of the Bison.
Jurenovich posted a 36 on the outward nine and stands in a tie for ninth place with her 77. She is three strokes out of second place with 18 holes remaining.
Jurenovich was supported by an 80 from Kasha Scott, 81s from Lauren Bernard and Minjoo Lee, and an 83 from Bridget Wilcox.
The Bison played in the Jackrabbit Invitational in Nevada earlier in the week and had luggage problems following their cross country flight to Virginia. In Williamsburg the teams were met by high winds that sent scores soaring on day one.
Yale got a terrific 6-under 66 from Seo Hee Moon and shot an opening-round 296 to take a 12-shot lead over second-place St. John's (308). Elon and Penn are tied for third at 315, followed by Old Dominion and Georgetown at 317. Eastern Kentucky is in seventh place at 318, with Bucknell one behind EKU.
The final round is scheduled for Sunday morning.
