NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The Bucknell women's water polo team split a pair of two-goal games Wednesday as it continued its spring break trip to California. Playing their second consecutive ranked opponent, the Bison lost their first game of the day by an 11-9 score to No. 17 Cal State Northridge. Approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of that game, Bucknell was back in the pool against Marist and won that contest 13-11.
Bucknell (8-7) is now 3-2 on its seven-game trip to the west coast.
Hallie Kennan (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) totaled a team-high five goals and one assist in Wednesday's two contests, which featured balanced scoring as eight different Bison registered multi-goal days.
In the opener against the nationally ranked Matadors, Bucknell was tied 4-4 at halftime and played even with them in the fourth quarter, but Cal State Northridge outscored the Bison 2-0 in the third quarter, proving to be the difference in the game.
Mackenzie Ferry (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley) led the Bucknell offense with a season-high three goals, while Kennan and Kandis Canonica (Burlingame, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) added two apiece. One of Ferry's three scores was a penalty shot.
Brittany Connell (Montebello, Calif./Montebello) started in goal and played the first half of both games and finished the day with three saves. Freshman netminder Rena Heim (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) saw second-half action and finished with 10 stops, including eight in the win over Marist.
The Bison needed a strong fourth quarter to defeat the Red Foxes for the second time in two tries this year. Bucknell outscored Marist 5-2 in the fourth quarter after trailing 9-8 entering the final period. Ten of the Bison's 22 goals on the day came in the fourth quarters.
Kennan netted three goals, while Julianne Valdes (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep), Heather Smith (Redwood City, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) and Ariel Frankeny (Fountain Valley, Calif./Fountain Valley) chipped in two apiece as the Bison scored their second-highest number of goals in a game this season.
Bucknell will take the next two days off and then play single contests Saturday (vs. No. 14 UC Santa Barbara) and Sunday (vs. Cal State San Bernardino) to wrap up its trip west.
