LAKELAND, Fla. - The Bucknell baseball team's starting pitching continues to excel as Dylan Seeley (Shavertown, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) hurled 8.1 innings and allowed just one run as the Bison won their third straight game, 4-1 over Bradley, Monday at Henley Field. Bucknell (6-7) has now won six of its last eight contests and is 2-0 on its weeklong trip to Florida.
Bucknell, which has a stellar 2.18 ERA since the end of the season-opening four-game series with James Madison, has received especially strong pitching during its three-game winning streak. The Bison have yielded just four runs in their last three outings and starters have combined for a 0.89 ERA over that span, allowing two earned runs in 20.1 innings.
Seeley worked two hitters into the ninth and yielded just a first-inning run as he picked up his first win of the year. He scattered eight hits and four times stranded runners on third base. One of the best control pitchers in program history, Seeley did not walk a hitter as he helped end Bradley's (9-5) five-game winning streak.
Steve Carlin (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Memorial) relieved Seeley with a runner on second and one out in the ninth, and after allowing a single to the first hitter he faced, earned his third save of the season by inducing a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
Bucknell tallied seven hits in the contest, including two apiece by Drew Constable (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) and Travis Clark (Foster City, Calif./St. Ignatius). Both played a part in the Bison's first run of the game as Constable led off the fifth with a double and Clark followed with a run-scoring single to tie the game at 1-1.
A one-out RBI single by Constable in the sixth gave Bucknell the lead for good, while a two-run single by Bob Donato (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) in the eighth tacked on a pair of insurance runs. Constable and Clark came around to score on Donato's single.
The Bison capitalized on eight walks by the Bradley pitching staff. Danny Gifford (1-1) received the loss as he walked three and allowed two hits in his 1+ innings of work.
Bucknell's Doug Shribman (Marblehead, Mass./Belmont Hill School) registered a first-inning single to left, extending his team-best hitting streak to five games. He also drew a pair of walks, including an intentional pass that loaded the bases in the seventh inning.
The win helped the Bison improve to 5-2 this year in games decided by three runs or less.
Bucknell will continue its Florida trip Tuesday with an 11 a.m. game against North Dakota State at the Lake Myrtle Complex in Auburndale, Fla.
