LA VERNE, Calif. – Kandis Canonica (Burlingame, Callif./St. Ignatius Prep) tallied a team-high four goals and Bucknell found the back of the net a season-high 15 times as it defeated La Verne, 15-5, in women's water polo action Saturday at the Claremont Convergence. The victory completed a perfect 2-0 day for the Bison, who edged Concordia, 12-11, earlier in the morning.
Canonica, who broke Bucknell's career scoring record earlier in the day against Concordia, extended that record even more with her four goals and one assist. She now has 365 points in her four-year career, seven more than former record-holder Aubrey Rowe.
Canonica was one of four Bison to post a multi-goal game as Hallie Kennan (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) added three goals and two assists, Julianne Valdes (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) tallied two goals and an assist, as did Mackenzie Ferry (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley).
Bucknell (7-5), which extended its winning streak to three games, held La Verne to just one goal in the middle two quarters to extend a 4-2 first-quarter lead to 12-3 following the third period.
Kennan and Ferry were not strong only on the offensive end as each recorded a season-high four steals, equaling the most by a Bison this year.
Bucknell's goalies – Rena Heim (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) and Brittany Connell (Montebello, Calif./Montebello) – also had strong showings. Heim started and made three saves against just two goals allowed, while Connell posted three stops and yielded three second-half goals after the outcome was no longer in doubt. One of her three saves was on a five-meter penalty shot.
Amanda Skonezney (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) won 1 of 2 sprints in the contest, bringing her career tally to 131 sprints won. That ties her for first in the program record books with Eileen Ketterer, who has been at the top of that list since 2003.
The Bison, who are slated to play seven games in California over the next week, will be idle the next two days before playing No. 11 Long Beach State Tuesday at 10 p.m. Eastern.
