For me, Erg Armageddon has always symbolized a transition. It is a transition from all the hard work we have been doing on the ergs piece after piece, day after day, to the start of our training on the water and the racing season. When I arrived in Davis Gym last weekend, I knew this was my last Erg Armageddon as a senior, and I also knew my teammates and I had been working extremely hard training throughout the winter season. Now was the time to test ourselves.
As my race, the varsity lightweight event, began, I felt confident. The frosh had performed extremely well in the `novice' events, and, although we all were racing on our individual ergs, the team was still influencing and encouraging me to push myself. My little simulated boat on the screen began its race, and the feeling of adrenaline from racing filled my body. As the race continued, I enjoyed the competition, the cheering, and the challenge, and a few minutes later, the race was over. My coxswain, Victoria Dudley, reminded me that I had achieved my goals that I set before the race: a consistent split and a first place victory. Erg Armageddon was a great opportunity to assess the work I have been doing the past few weeks, and it gave me a little taste of competition that we all yearn for during the spring racing season.
Now, with the end of Erg Armageddon, I am excited for the transition from my little simulated boat on the screen to the reality of a larger boat on the water. I am ready for the transition from my teammates and I pushing each other to all of us pushing together in unison. With only a few weeks left until the start of the spring 2011 season, who knows what transitions are to come for the Bucknell Women's Rowing team as a whole.
