RICHMOND, Va. - Jack Boehm (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) pitched five innings of shutout relief and Bob Donato (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) homered for the third straight game as the Bucknell baseball team earned its first win of the year, 5-3 over Richmond Saturday afternoon at Pitt Field. David Duffett (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and Drew Constable (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) each posted two hits for the Bison, who outhit the Spiders 11-6.
Boehm (1-0), typically a starter, entered the game in the fifth inning with Bucknell (1-5) trailing 3-2. He limited Richmond (3-4) to just three hits and four baserunners during his five innings of work. He struck out three and allowed no more than four Spiders to step to the plate in any inning.
Boehm followed starter Ryan Ebner (Sinking Spring, Pa./The Hill School) on the mound, and Ebner had a solid outing as well. He yielded a first-inning solo home run to Robby Massar, but sent Richmond down in order in the second and third innings. He was then hurt by three straight walks to begin the fourth inning, but worked out of the jam allowing just two runs.
Bucknell, which had at least two baserunners in every inning but the fourth and seventh frames, took its first lead of the game in the third inning when Donato and Gerry Runyan (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) hit back-to-back solo home runs to make the score 2-1. It was the third straight contest with a home run for Donato, who led off Friday's contest and last Sunday's game at James Madison with homers.
The Bison tied the score at 3-3 with an unearned run in the fifth and took the lead on a two-out Doug Shribman (Marblehead, Mass./Belmont Hill School) single to left in the sixth that scored Robb Scott (Clemmons, N.C./Deerfield Academy), who had drawn a one-out walk.
Bucknell added an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Duffett led off with a single through the left side and later scored on pinch hitter Russell Seidell's (Granville, Ohio/Granville) single up the middle after a sacrifice bunt by Constable moved him up to second.
Richmond used three pitchers in the contest. Starter Anthony Cafagna (1-1) last 6.0 innings and yielded eight hits and four runs while walking four and striking out a pair. The Bison managed just three hits, one walk and one run off relievers Chris Bates and Alex Maffett over the final three frames.
Bucknell's ERA this weekend after two games of the three-game set against the Spiders is 2.12.
The Bison and Richmond will square off in the rubber game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
