Bucknell Women's Water Polo Wraps Up Weekend with 12-8 Loss at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Amanda Skonezney (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Haley Prickett (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar) scored two goals apiece and Kandis Canonica (Burlingame, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) dished out a season-high five assists, but the Bucknell women's water polo team lost at Maryland, 12-8, Sunday morning on the final day of the Maryland Invitational. It was the first true road game of the season for the Bison, who fell to 4-3 this year. The Terrapins improved to 2-4 on the young season.
Bucknell trailed 7-4 at halftime and could not overcome the deficit as Maryland led by as many as six goals in the second half.
Freshmen Julianne Valdes (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep, Heather Smith (Redwood City, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) and Mackenzie Ferry (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley), as well as senior co-captain Meghan McNally (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy), tallied single goals, rounding out the list of Bison who found the back of the net.
Canonica's five assists upped her career point total to 350. She is now just one behind second-place Meagan Gins and eight behind record-holder Aubrey Rowe on the program's all-time scoring list. Canonica already owns the career assist mark with 187, 45 more than second-place Adrienne Schober.
Goalies Brittany Connell (Montebello, Calif./Montebello) and Rena Heim Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) split time in cage with Connell getting her fifth start of the season. She made five saves in the first half, while Heim recorded a pair of stops after halftime.
Bucknell will return home next weekend, Feb. 26-27, to host the ECAC Championship. Its first game is Saturday at noon against Iona. The Bison are 50-17 all-time at Kinney Natatorium, including 4-0 this year.
