LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Coming off the best fall season in program history, the Bucknell women's golf team gets back in action this weekend at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic, the largest women's collegiate event in the country. The 36-team, 54-hole tournament will be played Sunday through Tuesday at the Cougar Point and Oak Point courses at the Kiawah Island Resort in South Carolina.
With a lineup consisting of a senior, a junior and three freshman, coach Kevin Jamieson's team put together a record-setting fall season. The Bison opened the year by winning their own invitational in runaway fashion, and they closed out the fall campaign with a victory at the Wendy's Invitational in Charleston, S.C. The latter win was the first in program history on a visiting golf course.
Bucknell also turned in a runner-up finish at the Rutgers Invitational, took third at Akron's Zippy Invitational, and had solid 10th-place finishes at events hosted by Wisconsin and Penn State.
Junior Minjoo Lee posted a 76.92 scoring average in the fall, just missing her own school record of 76.90. She led the Bison to victory at the Wendy's Invitational by winning her first career individual title with rounds of 74-72. Lee, who was also third at the Bucknell Invitational, earned the Big South Golfer of the Week award after the win at the Wendy's Invite.
Senior Katie Jurenovich enjoyed a very steady fall season that was highlighted by her win at the Bucknell Invitational. Jurenovich fired an even-par 70 in the final round to make up a four-shot deficit, and she won the tournament in a four-hole playoff. The round of 70 tied the school record -- the mark would only survive for three more weeks -- and earned her a Big South Golfer of the Week citation. Jurenovich averaged 78.0 in the fall.
First-year players Kasha Scott, Lauren Bernard and Bridget Wilcox made immediate impacts in the fall. Scott had the lowest scoring average (78.9) of the trio, and she finished the campaign with a runner-up finish, one shot behind Lee, at the Wendy's Invitational. She was also eighth at the Rutgers Invitational and posted a 2-over 72 in her first collegiate tournament.
Wilcox made headlines at the Nittany Lion Invitational with a 3-under 69 in the second round, a new school record. She finished T-16th in that event, making her the low Bison for the week. Wilcox averaged 81.2 for the season.
Bernard turned in three rounds of 75 or better, with a low of 73, and she compiled an 80.3 average. Bernard's top finish was T-8th at Rutgers.
Bucknell averaged 312.6 in the fall, a new team record despite two bad-weather events late in the season. The Bison broke 300 three times, including a pair of school-record 296s at the Bucknell Invitational and Nittany Lion Invitational.
College of Charleston serves as host of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Classic. Other teams in the field include Iowa, Nebraska, Miami, Arkansas State, Wichita State, Campbell, Florida International, Richmond, Oral Roberts, James Madison, Drake, Old Dominion, Morehead State, Charleston Southern, Middle Tennessee, The Citadel, Western Carolina, Mercer, Presbyterian, Jacksonville State, Winthrop, Longwood, Wofford, Akron, William & Mary, Jacksonville, Central Arkansas, Elon, South Carolina State, USC Upstate, Houston Baptist, Newberry and Daytona State.
Teams will play either the Oak Point or Cougar Point course in round one, and then switch courses for round two. In the third and final round, the top 20 teams will play for the championship at Cougar Point, with teams 21-36 at Oak Point.
Later this spring, Bucknell will travel to the Jackrabbit Invitational in Nevada, the C&F Bank Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Va., and the Big South Championship back at The Patriot Club in South Carolina.
