HARRISONBURG, Va. - James Madison scored 15 first-inning runs and set a program record for runs in a game as it defeated the Bucknell baseball team, 37-7, in the season opener for both teams Friday afternoon at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park. The game was played in unseasonably warm 73-degree weather with the wind blowing out to left center field.
James Madison (1-0) hit 10 home runs in the contest and recorded 28 hits en route to the victory. Catcher Jake Lowery was 3-for-3 with three home runs and eight RBIs. He was one of three Dukes with multi-home run games.
The top of the Bison lineup produced five of Bucknell's eight hits as leadoff hitter Bob Donato (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) was 3-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI. No. 2 hitter Gerry Runyan (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) was 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Scott Reed's (Reston, Va./South Lakes) fourth-inning two-out home run put Bucknell on the board for the first time.
Bucknell (0-1) used seven pitchers in the game with starter Dylan Seeley (Shavertown, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) (0-1) suffering the loss.
Bucknell and James Madison will continue their four-game weekend series with a doubleheader Saturday starting at noon. The series will wrap up with a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
