Bison Track & Field's Bretscher Takes Fourth in Pentathlon in First Day of Patriot League Championships

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Kristin Bretscher (Farmingville, N.Y./Centereach) put the first points on the board for the Bucknell, placing fourth in the pentathlon as the Bison opened competition at the Patriot League Indoor Track & Field Championships at Navy's Wesley A. Brown Field House on Friday. Andrew Powell (Charlton, Mass./St. John's) got the men's squad off to a good start as well as he lead the heptathlon after four events.
Bretscher stayed steady throughout the five-event competition. Her top event was the shot put where she placed second with a throw of 36 feet, 7 ¾ inches. The senior was also fourth in the 800 meters, fifth in the high jump and long jump, and eighth in the 60-meter hurdles. At the end of the day, Bretscher had 3,114 points to put her in ninth all-time at Bucknell.
The fourth-place finish was the best of Bretscher's championship career. She also took seventh as a sophomore.
Leah Bettner (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) and Victoria Schmidt (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton) finished seventh and ninth, respectively in the pentathlon as well. Arian Davis of Navy won with 3,272 points.
After the first day of competition, Powell is in first place in the heptathlon with 2,867 points and a 244-point lead over second-place Rand Montermini of Navy. Powell also led after day one last year and ended up in third after the final event. On Friday, the junior earned individual wins in the high jump (6-8 ¾) and long jump (22-5). Both marks were season bests.
Greg Barbier (Commack, N.Y./St. Anthony's) is in 10th with 2,227 points.
The championship meet continues tomorrow and will conclude on Sunday. Saturday's action will get underway at 8:45 a.m.
