LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's lacrosse team hits the road for the first time in 2011, traveling to Howard for a 3 p.m. "Battle of the Bison" contest on Saturday. Both teams dropped their season openers earlier this week and come in with 0-1 records. Bucknell fell 14-10 to St. Bonaventure, while Howard lost 21-3 at George Washington.
Bucknell features 14 first-year players on its 2011 roster, and seven of those freshmen were in the starting lineup last Sunday against The Bonnies. The Bison struggled with turnovers, particularly in clearing situations, early in the game, but they seemed to become more comfortable as the game progressed. When they had the ball in settled offensive situations, the Bison generated plenty of good scoring chances. Bucknell scored seven goals on nine shots in the first half, and then in the second half they ran into a hot backup goalie, but still generated 16 shots while cutting the turnover total in half.
Ali Carey made quite a first impression with five goals, four of which came in the first half. The last Bucknell player to record five goals in her collegiate debut was current senior co-captain Julia Braun, who had five against Long Island in the 2008 season opener.
This will be the third all-time meeting between Bucknell and Howard, but it will be the first played in Washington, D.C. Bucknell won 16-6 in the 2004 season opener and 21-8 last season at Graham Field. In last year's meeting, Braun posted a career-high nine points on five goals and four assists, helping her eclipse the 100-point mark for her career. Then-senior Carol Donohue also had nine points while breaking the Bucknell career points and assists records. Alyssa DeLorenz had 10 saves for Bucknell, which outshot Howard 37-21 and won the draw control battle 22-9.
