LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell freshman women's water polo player Julianne Valdes (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Western Division Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, it was announced on Tuesday. Valdes is the second player in league history to earn both awards at once, following George Washington's Allison Peotter in 2009.
Valdes had a strong first weekend as a Bison as she totaled 11 goals, five assists, nine ejections drawn and four steals while helping Bucknell to a perfect 4-0 mark against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Gannon, Wagner and Siena.
The only Bucknell player to start all four games last weekend, Valdes made a splash in her first career game when she netted a team-high four goals. She became the first Bison freshman to score four goals in a season opener since Aubrey Rowe accomplished the feat in the 2006 opener.
Valdes finished the opening-weekend Bison Invitational with four multi-goal outings and led the team in goals, points and ejections drawn while tying for the team lead in assists.
Bucknell, which at 4-0 is off to the second-best start to a season in program history, will be back in action this coming weekend at the Maryland Invitational. The Bison will face George Washington (11 a.m.) and Wagner (2:30 p.m.) on Saturday and host Maryland (9:30 a.m.) on Sunday.
