LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior swimmer Matthew Segar (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) earned a pair of awards Monday, just days after achieving a U.S. Olympic Trials-qualifying time in the 200-meter freestyle at the AT&T Winter Nationals in Atlanta, Ga. Segar was named the Patriot League Male Swimmer of the Week for the second time in his career and he earned his second Susquehanna Valley Limousine Bison Athlete of the Week award as well.
A two-time All-Patriot League selection, Segar followed up his impressive Winter Nationals performance with a pair of first-place finishes in Saturday's dual meet at La Salle, which Bucknell (4-1) captured by a 171-127 score. Segar won the 200-yard free (1:39.46) and 400-yard free (4:40.11) as he was one of three Bison to post multiple individual victories in the meet. He was also part of the 400 free relay that swam the fastest time (3:07.52) in the final event of the day.
Segar was one of three Bison, along with Mike Nicholson and Emily Wright, to swim at the Winter Nationals last Thursday and Friday. He was the lone Bucknell swimmer to advance to a final as he swam his 200-meter prelim in 1:52.24, placing him 29th out of 97 and pushing him through to the "C" final, where he registered a 1:53.61 to finish 29th overall.
Segar, who also competed in the 400-meter free at the Winter Nationals, bettered the U.S. Olympic Trials cut (1:52.89) by .65 seconds.
The Bucknell record-holder in the 200-yard freestyle, Segar ranks in the top 10 in program history in four events. He has won the 200 free at four meets this year and the 500 free twice.
Segar and his Bison teammates now have more than a month off until their next competition. They will return to action with a dual meet at Colgate on Jan. 11.
