UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - One day after hosting Big Ten foe Michigan State in a dual inside Davis Gym, 10 members of the Bucknell wrestling team traveled about an hour west Sunday to compete at Penn State's Nittany Lion Open. Six of the 10 Bison won at least one bout, and 125-pound freshman Austin Miller was the lone Bucknell wrestler to advance to the quarterfinals of his bracket.
It was a young Bison group competing at Penn State's Rec Hall as half of the contingent was freshmen and three more were sophomores.
Miller advanced further than any of his teammates, but senior 157-pounder John Regan, sophomore 174-pounder Stephen McPeek and freshman 197-pounder Tyler Lyster each advanced to within one win of the quarterfinals in his weight class. Regan posted a pin and a decision in his first two bouts, but bowed out of the competition with a couple of medical forfeits.
Miller won his first two bouts as well, both by decision, before losing to Penn State's Jordan Conaway in the quarterfinals. Miller and Regan lead the Bison with seven wins apiece this season.
Overall, Bucknell's 10 grapplers finished with an 11-17 combined mark at the Nittany Lion Open.
Lyster (vs. No. 20 Christian Boley of Maryland) and freshman Doug Kellermeyer (vs. No. 16 Kyle John of Maryland) squared off against ranked opponents.
The Nittany Lion Open was not scored and thus there were no team standings, but host Penn State claimed six titles and totaled 18 placewinners.
Bucknell will next be in action Dec. 17 when it hosts Central Michigan, Princeton and Sacred Heart for the Bison Duals inside Davis Gym.
