Bucknell Wrestling Posts 2-1 Record at Bison Duals

| BUY PHOTOSLEWISBURG, Pa. -The Bucknell wrestling team entered Saturday's Bison Duals in Davis Gym looking for its first win of the year and it ended up with two. The Bison defeated EIWA foes Princeton (27-9) and Sacred Heart (51-0) by convincing margins before concluding the day with a tighter-than-the-score-indicated 21-12 loss to Central Michigan, which is ranked 19th nationally in the latest NWCA/USA Today rankings. Derrik Russell, Corey Lear, Joe McMullan and Stephen McPeek each posted perfect 3-0 marks on the day as Bucknell (2-6, 2-0 EIWA) collected 21 individual victories.
Austin Miller, Alex Pellicciotti and Tyler Lyster registered two wins apiece as 10 of the 11 Bison who wrestled on Saturday earned at least one victory. Ten of Bucknell's 21 wins were for bonus points, including eight in the win over Sacred Heart. Eight of the victories came from Lear and McMullan, two juniors who were making their season debuts.
The Bison opened the day with the 18-point victory over the Tigers (2-6, 1-2 EIWA), a team they lost to by an 18-16 score last December. The score was 3-3 after two bouts when a hard-fought overtime decision by Russell staked Bucknell to a 6-3 lead. It was the first of four Bison victories in a five-match span. Pins by Pellicciotti and McPeek during that stretch extended the Bucknell advantage to 21-6. A 10-4 decision by McMullan at 197 clinched the first win of the year for the Bison.
Miller set the tone for the positive day in the very first bout against Princeton. He upset No. 20 Garrett Frey by a 10-9 score.
Next up for Bucknell was Sacred Heart (0-10, 0-3 EIWA), a squad that lost by a combined 151-0 on Saturday. The Bison's final 51-0 margin of victory was the largest shutout win for Bucknell since defeating Gettysburg 53-0 during the 1986-87 campaign. Miller, Armato, McMullan and Lyster recorded pins for the Bison, who also received a forfeit at 149 pounds.
The final bout of the day was essentially for the championship of the four-team Bison Duals as Bucknell and Central Michigan (10-2, 2-0 MAC) were both 2-0 on the day. It was a close match that featured nine decisions overall and one pin by the Chippewas' No. 8-ranked Ben Bennett at 184 pounds. Two of the decisions went to overtime, including McMullan's 3-1 victory at 197 that narrowed the score to 18-12.
Overall, the Bison claimed four bouts against the Chippewas' lineup that featured three ranked grapplers with Russell, Lear, McPeek and McMullan coming away victorious.
With its two EIWA victories on Saturday, Bucknell has equaled its 2010-11 EIWA win total. The Bison were 2-5 opposite EIWA foes last year.
Bucknell will now be idle until it competes at the Midlands Championships Dec. 29-30 in Evanston, Ill. The Bison's next dual match will take place Jan. 11 at Old Dominion. Bucknell will return home just two more times all season - Feb. 5 (American) and Feb. 12 (Penn).
