PRINCESS, ANNE, Md. – Bucknell men's cross country placed 10th overall and the women's squad punched in a 12th-place team finish at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships on Saturday afternoon. D.J. Krystek led the men's squad, crossing the line 54th overall. Stephanie Fulmer, competing in her last cross country race as a member of the Orange and Blue, was 50th.
The Bison men finished 10th in a field of 25 in the team standings with 347 points. The placing was their highest since taking eighth in 2003. Winning the team title this fall was Georgetown with 47 points.
“I am so pleased with how our men raced. We have had so much adversity through injury and sickness,” said head coach Kevin Donner following the meet. “However, the seven guys we ran today ran their hearts out, and we finished in the top 10 for the first time since 2003. I believe a culture is now developing that will allow us to move up in the regional results over the next few years.”
Krystek led the way for the men with a 10-kilometer time of 31:59. Bucknell's four other scorers also finished in the top 100 with Dave Brown and John Dugan placing 68th and 69th, respectively. Michael McGown followed in 81st, while Eric Balaban was 99th.
Bucknell's women's squad did not fare quite as well after some miscues both from the runners and other sources.
“Our women probably ran too aggressively too early in the race, which started to take its toll at mid race,” said Donner. “The added distance because of the lead vehicle going the wrong way only added to our mistake. It was not where we were hoping to finish, but the five seniors who ran their last race have had a lot to be proud of during their career.”
As a team, Bucknell was 12th in a field of 29 with a total of 342 points. Villanova and Georgetown tied for the team title with 57 points apiece.
Leading the way for the women's squad was Fulmer. Her 50th-place finish on the 6K course came in 23:17. Fellow seniors Emily Liggett and Alysha Hooper weren't far behind. Liggett was 60th overall, while Hooper was 73rd. Freshman Betsy Edinger and junior Caroline Tolli rounded out Bucknell's top five in 78th and 86th place, respectively.
Earning the individual titles were Donn Cabral of Princeton on the men's side with a time of 30:30 and Sheila Reid of Villanova on the women's side in 21:32.
Bucknell will continue its season next weekend at the IC4A and ECAC Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y.
