HAMILTON, N.Y. - Looking for its first win in Hamilton, N.Y., in five years, Bucknell volleyball took a set off Colgate but came up short in the long run, falling 3-1 at Cotterell Court on Saturday afternoon. The Raiders (7-11, 4-1 PL) benefited from a well-rounded attack, putting three players in double-digit kills, while Anne Ellenberger (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon Honors) led the Bison (4-10, 1-4 PL) with eight kills and three blocks.
Through the four sets, Colgate showed a stronger attack. The Raiders hit .609 in the first set and, although that average dropped as the match wore on, they still closed things out with a .369 attack percentage. Bucknell finished at .155 for the match.
Bucknell had its best opportunity in the second set. The Bison bounced back from a 25-16 loss in the opening frame to win the next 25-21. Although they trailed by a few points through much of play in the second, the Bison eventually put together a 6-0 run to take a 16-13 lead. Bucknell maintained its advantage for the rest of the set, evening the contest with a kill from Kebah Edoho (Odenton, Md./Arundel) on set point.
Colgate righted itself after the loss, and the next two sets went strongly in its favor. A 15-6 stretch for the Raiders, which included more than a few service aces, gave them set number three by a score of 25-12.
Colgate never let Bucknell in the mix in the fourth set, either, taking a 20-9 lead right out of the gates. Lexi Finger served yet another ace to force the Bison into a timeout, but by that point the damage was done. Although Bucknell outscored Colgate after the break, it was too little too late and the Raiders won 25-15.
Colgate tallied 14 aces in the match, getting four from both Finger and Blaire Safir. Lindsay Young paced the Raiders in kills with 14. She was followed by Kayle Fifer's 12 on .625 hitting and Diane Seely's 11. Fifer also put up 38 assists.
Trailing Ellenberger in kills was Edoho, Katie Baumgarten (South Pasadena, Calif./South Pasadena) and Kristen Titley (Coral Gables, Fla./Palmer Trinity School) with six apiece. With her three blocks, Ellenberger continues to lead Bucknell in the category. She now has 58 total on the year, good for a 1.07 average.
Rose Lewis (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) and Morgan Markarian (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) tied for the team lead in digs with six each, and Kat Tauscher (Washington, D.C./National Cathedral School) tallied 18 assists.
Bucknell will be back at Davis Gym for its next five matches. The homestand opens on Oct. 14 with Army at 7 p.m.
