LEWISBURG, Pa. - Colgate used a balanced attack and good serving to take a 3-0 victory over Bucknell in a Patriot League volleyball match at Davis Gym on Saturday evening. Katie Baumgarten (South Pasadena, Calif./South Pasadena) led the Bison with nine kills and eight digs, while Jessica Serrato (Millbrae, Calif./Saint Ignatius Prep) hit .438 with eight kills.
Bucknell (6-13, 3-7 Patriot League) got out to a good start in its home finale, taking an early three-point lead in the opening set. A kill from Anne Ellenberger (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon Honors) made it 11-8, and the Bison still had a two-point cushion at 12-10 after a putaway from Kebah Edoho (Odenton, Md./Arundel). Colgate rallied to tie it at 12, but then Bucknell took the lead back on another Edoho kill.
But Colgate's Lexi Finger served five straight points, two coming on aces and another on an overpass that was put down by Lindsay Young. That gave the Raiders (11-14, 7-3) a 17-13 lead, and they never again trailed in the set. Bucknell did pull within 21-20 on a Colgate hitting error, but the Raiders finished on a 4-1 run to take the opening frame 25-21.
Kat Tauscher (Washington, D.C./National Cathedral School) opened the second set with an ace, and a 5-2 run capped by a Baumgarten kill gave the Bison a 12-8 lead. But the Raiders came right back with seven straight points, going up 15-12 after an ace by Allie Dyer and three Bison hitting errors.
Bucknell surged back in front behind some good serving from Kadri Lutter (Saku Parish, Estonia/Audentes Sports Gymnasium). She served four three straight points, capped by an ace that put the Bison ahead 19-17. Colgate evened things at 20-apiece on a Kaylee Fifer kill, and it was still all knotted up at 22-22 when the Raiders posted the final three points to take the set 25-22.
Colgate took control of the third set fairly early, breaking open a 3-3 tie with a 16-5 run. The Raiders led by as many as 11 and held on for a 25-17 win.
Five Colgate players logged at least eight kills. Kaylee Dougherty, Maureen Colligan and Michelle McCarthy finished with nine kills each, while Young and Diane Seeley had eight apiece. Colgate hit .272 for the match. Fifer led the squad with 35 assists and nine digs.
Serrato had eight kills with only one error in 16 attempts. Edoho finished with six kills without an error and hit .462. Ellenberger also had six kills to go with a match-high five blocks. Tauscher finished with 22 assists as the Bison hit .173 overall.
Bucknell finishes the year with four straight road matches, beginning next weekend with a trip to the Lehigh Valley to face Lehigh and Lafayette.
