SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The No. 17 Bucknell men's water polo team on Sunday wrapped up a difficult weekend where it had to face four top-15 teams in a 26-hour span at the Santa Clara Rodeo. The Bison completed the two-day event with losses to No. 15 Santa Clara, 13-6, and No. 6 Pepperdine, 16-7. Bucknell is now 10-8 this year.
Beau Caillouette led the Bison in the opener against the host Broncs with two goals and a pair of ejections drawn. Jack Else, Alex Nowlin, Daniel Schwartz and Mike Kimble added a goal apiece to round out the scoring. Else, who drew seven ejections in Saturday's two games, drew a team-high three, but Bucknell converted just three times in 11 six-on-five chances.
Santa Clara jumped out to a 4-1 first-quarter lead and led 7-3 at the half. It led by as many as eight goals in the second half.
Bucknell was even with Pepperdine at 2-2 after one quarter in the nightcap, but the Waves outscored the Bison 7-1 in the second quarter to take a commanding 9-3 halftime edge. Kimble was the only Bucknell player to register a multi-goal outing as he tallied both first-quarter scores for the Bison.
Six of Bucknell's last eight games have been against ranked foes.
The Bison's regular season is now complete. They will be idle next weekend and then begin postseason play with the Southern Championships Nov. 4-6 at Princeton.
